A recent SHRM article highlighted the “persistent problem” that “many employees continue to find it difficult to make ends meet.” It featured a graphic entitled Losing Ground based on PwC 2023 data that “60% of U.S. workers say their salaries aren’t keeping up with the pace of inflation.”

While you scour the compensation landscape to craft offerings that sharpen your company’s competitive edge, isn’t there a point of diminishing returns? Where more benefits add overhead and complexity without seeing employee attraction, retention, and productivity rise?

What if you had a resource to empower employees with the financial acumen to

    • ·         Become more efficient with their compensation?
    • ·         Eliminate unhealthy debt or avoid debt traps altogether?
    • ·         Reduce financial stress that undermines their workplace performance as well as their personal happiness?

And what if that resource were

    • ·         Free?
    • ·         Without contracts?
    • ·         Without branded sponsorship and associated profiteering?

That resource is The Society for Financial Awareness (SOFA). SOFA is a nationwide nonprofit Educational Speaker’s Bureau providing free financial workshops to companies, organizations, city and federal governments, places of worship, other non-profit organizations, and more. SOFA’s mission is to end financial illiteracy, one community at a time, by conducting financial education workshops across the country.  SOFA members are professionals such as Financial Advisors, Estate Planning Attorneys, Accountants, Realtors, Mortgage Brokers, Credit Counselors and Health & Wellness Practitioners.

SOFA has presented to employees of ADP, Disney, ExxonMobil, Intel, NASA, San Diego Zoo, Verizon, and many more household names.

April is national Financial Literacy Month. With the tax filing deadline around the corner, it’s the ideal time to start equipping your employees to elevate their financial stewardship.

If you would like SOFA to host a free workshop at your company or organization, or if you would like more information about our organization visit www.sofausa.org or call (800) 689-4851. Or ask SOFA’s Southeast Idaho SHRM member, Garth Hassel, at ghassel@sofausa.org or (208) 520-7680.

U.S.Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced Friday a new Form I-9—which has been streamlined and shortened—that employers should use beginning Aug. 1, 2023.

Employers may continue to use the older Form I-9 (Rev. 10/21/19)  through Oct. 31., 2023. After that date, they will be subject to penalties if they use the older form. The new version will not be available for downloading until Aug. 1.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a final rule that allows the agency to create a framework under which employers could implement alternative document examination procedures, such as remote document examination. The new form subsequently has a checkbox to indicate when an employee’s Form I-9 documentation was examined using a DHS-authorized alternative procedure.

At this time, the final rule only allows employers using E-Verify to use alternative verification methods.
